Quilon

Quilon offers a unique means of seeing Kerala's backwaters, via the nine hour ferry ride from here to Alleppey. The boat leaves at 10am. every morning, and spends the day chugging through lakes and canals, stopping at water bound villages all along the way.

Your travelling companions will constantly be changing as farmers, traders, schoolchildren, grand mothers and businessmen hop on and off the boat at various stops.
It is a fairly arduous trip - the old ferry boat has wooden bench seats and very rudimentary bathroom facilities.
The trip also provides a complete backwaters experience from narrow canals to wide lakes and you will see chinese fishing nets, churches, houses, farms and a range of scenery and human activity that will make the nine hours fly by

Kumarakom

This is an ideal place for backwater cruises. There is a 14-acre bird sanctuary situated on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake. The Sanctuary adds to the natural beauty of Kumarakom. Birds (Waterfowl, Water ducks Cuckoos, Wild ducks etc) nest  here. Birds like siberion storks migrate here every  year.

Alleppey

Alleppey is one of the most important tourist centres in the state. The large network of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. It has a long sandy beach. The beach here is spectacular. At one end are the dense palm groves that are so characteristic of Kerala's landscape. This busy city, a centre for coir and carpet industries, is an ideal headquarters for backwaters touring also.
