The sanctuary now renamed as Periyar Tiger Reserve has an area of 750 sq.kms that lies at an elevation of 900 to 1800
meters above sea level on the hills of westerm ghats. Thekkady is on the border of Tamil Nadu.ar is one of India's major sanctuaries, with elephants, monkeys, and wide boar in abundance, as
well as some other elusive but occasionally spotted species such as tigers. The sanctuary offers a lovely and comfortable way to see the animals, via boat rides on the man-made lake, which the
wildlife areas encircle. The greatest attractions are the herds of wild elephants that come down to the lake to frolic on the waters, along with their young ones. An exhilarating experience is an elephant
ride through the dense jungle. The sanctuary is open throughout the year, but the best season is from September to May.
